The goal of the Chawner Almshouses Charity is to provide comfortable, low cost accommodation to people with local connections and who are of limited financial means. The charity is funded from a mix of "Maintenance Contributions" paid by our Residents, and donations or grants made by private individuals and public/commercial organisations.

The listed building containing the three cottages is full of character and is a valuable contribution to the aspect of the village. However, the age of the building means that it requires ongoing attention to maintain its fabric and appearance.  This cost, coupled with the day to day expenses of providing safe and modern accommodation to our residents is very challenging.

Your donation could help fund one of our projects, which include:
  1. £300 - Jet wash all exterior paths to improve safety of access for residents and visitors
  2. £400 - Carry out safety inspections and annual service routines on all gas installations and fire extinguishers
  3. £500 - Insure the almshouse
  4. £600 - Carry out urgent repairs to tiled roof and broken drains
  5. £2,000 - "Turn-around" costs for replacing carpets, re-decorating and landscaping at one of the almshouses which recently become vacant
  6. £2,500 - Refit the bathroom at one of the almshouses to include a walk in shower facility to aid access
  7. £30,000 - Replace the deteriorating and draughty windows throughout, to the exacting standards demanded as part of the listed status of the building

If you feel that the Almshouses are a valuable asset to the village, and you would like to help with a financial contribution, there are several ways in which you could donate.  Your donation can be confidential and discreet or, if you are a business or public organisation, we can publicise your contribution to advertise your support for a local institution.  Taxpayers may be able to offset some or all of their donation against tax.  Listed below are some of the ways in which you might consider helping:
  1. Make a one-off gift or a monthly donation via a standing order set up with your bank
  2. Bequeath a sum of money in your will
  3. Donate the proceeds from a funeral collection (sometimes made in lieu of flowers)
